In 2019, a committee appointed to observe the 275th anniversary of the founding of The Lodge School and Codrington College, decided to publish a book that would record the unusual bequest of Christopher Codrington and follow the fortunes of the two remarkable institutions that evolved as a result of his will. They stand today within two historic plantations called College and Society, a union of two earlier estates of Consett’s and Didmarton, in the rural parish of St. John on the Atlantic coast of Barbados. This island of folded clay and terraced coral outcrops rises proud, independent and insular, in every meaning of the words, well to the east of the other islands of the Lesser Antilles.
